Polyurethane elastomers, or TPU's, are polymers with terrific resistance to abrasion and solvents. TPU's are made from a diisocyanate and polyol with either ester or ether backbone. Ether-based TPU's are preferred where hydrolysis resistance is needed. Ester-based TPU's usually have better mechanical properties. These are available in Shore hardness from 40A to 60D.
HiTech Polymers offers these as neat polymers, as alloys, and as concentrates, containing lubricants, antistatic agents, colors, conductive fillers and other functional additives. Specific TPU's available are:
-
Black or white concentrates
-
Conductive polymers (4931 is polyester-based)
-
Antistatic polymers (natural colored)
-
PTFE-filled
-
Glass reinforced
HiTech Polymers makes a special "No Dry" TPU which does not need drying prior to molding or extrusion, where conventional TPU's always need drying prior to molding or extrusion. No Dry types are available in both ether and ester types.
Special "high strength"(HS) grades of polyurethane elastomers are available with either glass fiber or carbon fiber reinforcement.
